B+W Folding and Metal Lens Hoods
Lens hoods, often also referred to as sunshades or lens hoods, keep out light that would otherwise enter the Lens from outside the angle of view and not contribute to image composition. This prevents unnecessary light from being reflected diffusely or directionally at the lens surfaces and edges, inside the lens barrel, and inside the camera body.

Because such stray light obscures the image or overlays it with light spots and "ghost images," it degrades contrast. Lens hoods can therefore contribute significantly to improving image quality, especially when light is incident obliquely from the front and when the subject environment is very bright outside the frame.
