  • Insert geo-tags into the EXIF data
  • GPS logger function
  • adjustable intervals
  • software map utility included
  • displayable in Google Maps
  • Precise synchronization of camera time

With the also newly introduced GPS receiver GP-E2, geo-tags with latitude, longitude, altitude, as well as direction information can be inserted into the EXIF data of the images. The GP-E2 is compatible with the EOS-1D X, the EOS 7D (with a corresponding firmware update) and the new EOS 5D Mark III.

The GPS Logger function allows the route to be tracked even when the GPS receiver is not connected to the camera. While the GP-E2 does not then transfer the data to the camera, it does generate a log file that stores the location information of the trip. The location is queried and stored at preset intervals. The data can then be linked with the included Map Utility software and displayed in Google Maps.

GPS satellites transmit very precise atomic time UTC (coordinated universal time) data in addition to geodata. These can be used to also synchronize the time of the connected camera via the GPS receiver. In this way, the camera always displays the correct time. The function is also helpful when the image material of a multi-camera operation with different EOS 5D Mark III cameras has to be sorted at the end of the shooting for further joint processing.
