For Canon the Lenses with an EF bayonet are suitable for the Canon EOS digital cameras. EF stands for "electronic focus", which also names the main feature of this lens development, the autofocus motor, which is not in the camera body in this case but in the lens, and which is equipped with a USM (ultrasonic motor). The particularly compact and lightweight Canon EF-M bayonets are for the single-lens reflex camera Canon EOS developed lenses ? EOS means "Electro-Optical-System".
Within the very wide range of Lenses for Nikon the lenses of the DX-Nikkor series (all with F bayonet) were developed for the in-house digital SLR camera.
